Limpopo’s vibrant music community is in mourning following the sudden death of 31-year-old musician and Lekompo artist, Molimisi Baaitsi — affectionately known to fans as Dr Nel.

The popular performer was found dead along Phetogo Drive in the early hours of Sunday, 2 November, just hours after entertaining crowds at the grand opening of a local pub. Police have since launched a culpable homicide investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

The discovery
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that officers were called to the scene at around 4am after receiving reports of a body lying on the road.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police found a male lying face down on the roadway. He was certified dead on the scene by Witpoort Emergency Medical Services personnel,” said Ledwaba.

Preliminary reports indicate that Baaitsi was last seen alive performing at a local entertainment venue hours before his body was discovered. Although police have not officially released his name, friends, fellow artists, and community members have confirmed his identity.

A beloved figure in the music scene
News of Dr Nel’s passing has sent ripples through Limpopo’s close-knit artistic community. Known for his energetic stage presence and fusion of traditional Limpopo rhythms with modern house sounds, Baaitsi had become a household name in the province’s Lekompo music circuit.

Fans took to social media to express their grief, describing him as a humble and generous performer whose music united people from all walks of life.

“He was one of the most humble and talented artists to come from our area,” said one local fan. “He always gave back to the community and inspired so many of us.”

Another musician who recently performed with him said: “Dr Nel represented hope for young musicians in rural Limpopo. He proved that talent and hard work could take you far, no matter where you start.”

Police probe underway
The police investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to piece together what transpired before Baaitsi’s death. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

“At this stage, the circumstances that led to the incident are under police investigation,” Ledwaba said.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public to assist in the probe. “We urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything on that night to contact Detective Sergeant Lesiba Tsebe on 071 466 6558, their nearest police station, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” Ledwaba added. A career on the rise
Before his untimely passing, Dr Nel had been carving out a promising career in the South African music industry. His songs — often laced with messages of community pride, love, and cultural identity — had become staples at weddings, community events, and festivals across Limpopo.

Friends revealed that Baaitsi had been working on new music and collaborations, with plans to release fresh material before the end of the year. He had also expressed a desire to mentor younger artists in the province.

“He was just getting started,” said a close friend. “He had so many dreams — new songs, tours, and a vision to uplift others. It’s heartbreaking that his journey ended like this.”

Calls for answers and accountability
As tributes continue to pour in, calls are growing for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the musician’s death.

“We cannot lose another young artist under unclear circumstances,” said a community leader. “His family, friends, and fans deserve answers.”

A community in mourning
In his hometown of Botshabelo, silence hangs heavy where Baaitsi’s music once filled the air. His songs, which once celebrated life and resilience, now serve as a painful reminder of a talent gone too soon.

“He was more than an entertainer — he was a symbol of hope,” said a fellow performer. “Limpopo has lost one of its brightest lights.”

As police continue their investigation, the province mourns a rising star whose rhythm brought people together — and whose absence has left a void in the heart of Limpopo’s music scene.
